VP Duterte's camp says case 'closed' after SC upholds impeachment ruling
The camp of Vice President Sara Duterte on Thursday, Jan. 29, said the impeachment complaint filed against her is a case “closed” following the Supreme Court (SC) upheld its decision to declare the move to oust her unconstitutional.
Duterte’s defense team said in a statement that it acknowledges the SC resolution that denied the Motion for Reconsideration that was filed by the House of Representatives over the High Court’s earlier decision.
The defense team found the ruling as something that “definitively lays down clear and authoritative guidance on the constitutional limits and proper treatment of impeachment proceedings.”
“With these issues settled by the Court, the matter is now closed,” the Vice President’s camp said.
“We should then move on to address the nation’s other pressing concerns,” it added.
In February 2025, House members moved to impeach Duterte over charges related to corruption, plotting to assassinate President Marcos, her alleged involvement in extrajudicial killings, and incitement to insurrection and public disorder.
But in July 2025, SC declared the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte unconstitutional, noting that it is barred by the one-year rule under the Constitution, and that it violates the right to due process enshrined in the Bill of Rights.
