The House leadership in the 20th Congress says it respects the Supreme Court's (SC) reaffirmation Thursday, Jan. 29 that the impeachment complaint pursued against Vice President Sara Duterte during the previous Congress was unconstitutional.
"Kinikilala ng Kapulungan ng mga Kinatawan ang desisyon ng Korte Suprema kaugnay ng Articles of Impeachment laban kay Vice President Sara Duterte (The House of Representatives recognizes the decision of the SC regarding the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte)," House Speaker Faustino "Bojie" Dy III said in a statement.
"Ang impeachment ay isang prosesong malinaw na itinatakda ng Konstitusyon at may tiyak na pamantayan (Impeachment is a process clearly mandated by the Constitution and governed by specific standards)," noted Dy, Isabela's 6th district representative.
"Mahalaga po ang pag-iingat sa proseso ng impeachment—isang pananagutang kaakibat ng mandato na ipinagkatiwala sa atin ng sambayanang Pilipino (Great care must be exercised in the impeachment process—a responsibility that comes with the mandate entrusted to us by the Filipino people)," added the Speaker.
House members from the previous 19th Congress prepared Vice President Duterte's impeachment complaint--including the articles of impeachment--and overwhelmingly adopted it in plenary in February 2025.
While awaiting the Senate impeachment trial, the SC ruled in favor of a petition from the Vice President's camp and declared the complaint unconstitutional in July 2025.
The House filed a motion for reconsideration (MR), but this was ultimately defeated by the SC En Banc ruling Thursday.
Echoing Dy's remarks were South Cotabato 2nd district Rep. Ferdinand Hernandez, the legislative chamber’s senior deputy speaker.
"The House of Representatives takes note of the recent decision of the [SC] of the Philippines resolving the motion for reconsideration related to the impeachment case involving Vice President Sara Duterte," Hernandez said in a separate statement.
He said that as a co-equal branch of government, the House fully respects the SC as the final arbiter on issues of constitutionality.
"This respect is grounded in our shared commitment to the rule of law, the separation of powers, and the orderly functioning of democratic institutions," he said.
Hernandez says the House of Representatives remains guided by its constitutional mandate and reaffirms its commitment to upholding democratic principles, institutional respect, and the rule of law.
