First Gen to supply geothermal power to Swiss-Belhotel Makati
First Gen Corp., the power generation arm of the Lopez family, has secured a deal to supply 100 percent renewable energy to Valero Grand Suites by Swiss-Belhotel, one of the first such transitions for a major hotel in the Makati central business district.
In a statement on Thursday, Jan. 29, the Lopez-led company said the 271-room upscale hotel entered into a strategic partnership with First Gen to decarbonize its operations.
Under the agreement, the hotel’s electricity requirements are sourced from geothermal facilities operated by Energy Development Corporation (EDC), a First Gen subsidiary with assets in the Bicol region.
EDC stands as the world’s largest vertically integrated geothermal producer, providing a baseload supply of clean power that allows commercial users to pivot away from fossil fuel-dependent grids.
The transition was made possible through the government’s Green Energy Option Program (GEOP). The initiative allows energy consumers with an average peak demand of at least 100 kilowatts to bypass traditional distribution utilities and choose their own renewable energy providers.
By utilizing GEOP, Valero Grand Suites aims to align its Makati operations with the broader sustainability roadmap of Swiss-Belhotel International. Hotel representatives indicated that the shift is a response to an increasing segment of travelers who prioritize eco-friendly accommodations and ESG-compliant service providers.
The deal highlights First Gen’s aggressive push to capture the commercial and industrial market as Philippine corporations face mounting pressure to reduce their carbon footprints.
While First Gen maintains a significant portfolio of gas-fired power plants totaling 2,017 megawatts to support national grid stability, the company has been rapidly expanding its renewable footprint. Its current clean energy portfolio, which includes hydro, solar, wind, and geothermal assets, totals approximately 1,700 megawatts.
This partnership follows a similar move in the healthcare sector. Last month, First Gen signed an agreement with Capitol University Medical Center in Mindanao to provide 900 kilowatts of geothermal power from the Mt. Apo facility, making it the first hospital in that region to run entirely on renewable energy.
As the Philippine tourism and service sectors recover, First Gen continues to position its geothermal assets as a premium, reliable alternative to coal-fired power. (Gabriell Christel Galang)
