What fun things can you do at the Portal in BGC?
IRL meets the world
It’s official: Asia’s first Portal has landed in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. And yes, it’s just as cool and surreal as it sounds.
If you’ve been seeing clips of strangers waving, dancing, or playing games with people from other countries on your feed, that’s The Portal in action. The massive circular installation connects cities around the world in real time, turning a public space into a live, global window. Think FaceTime, but life-sized and way more fun.
So if you’re planning a visit, here are some fun ways to make the most of the experience.
Make new friends
The Portal is literally built for human connection. A simple wave, a smile, or a quick “hi” can spark a moment with someone thousands of miles away. You never know who you’ll meet on the other side, and that’s part of the magic.
Swap socials
Some visitors have managed to exchange Instagram handles or other social accounts after short but memorable interactions. Just be quick, the Portal shifts locations every few minutes. And a reminder for younger visitors: always ask for a parent’s consent before connecting with strangers online.
Play and get creative
Who said meeting people has to be awkward? Visitors have been spotted playing rock, paper, scissors, dancing, or filming content for TikTok and Reels. It’s a shared space for fun, creativity, and spontaneous moments, so don’t be afraid to join in.
According to Portals, the organization behind the installation, other Portals are located in Vilnius in Lithuania, Lublin in Poland, Dublin in Ireland, Philadelphia in the United States, and Ipswich in the United Kingdom. That means every visit is a surprise. One moment you’re waving at someone in Europe, the next you’re locking eyes with someone across the Atlantic.
What not to do
As fun as it is, the Portal also runs on mutual respect. Avoid showing sensitive images, using offensive language, or making inappropriate gestures. These actions can ruin the experience for everyone.
In fact, reports have shared that a Portal installation in New York had to be relocated to Philadelphia due to repeated misuse. We definitely don’t want that happening here.
So go ahead, wave, smile, play a game, and maybe make a new friend. Just remember: when the world is watching, kindness goes a long way.
