Farm output rises 0.5% in Q4 as poultry gains offset crop slump

Philippine agricultural output eked out a modest gain in the final months of 2025 as a surge in poultry and recovery in fisheries narrowly offset the slump in crop production.
Based on the data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority on Wednesday, Jan. 28, the value of production in agriculture and fisheries rose 0.5 percent in the fourth quarter from a year earlier to ₱487.04 billion.
For the full year, the sector’s total production value reached ₱1.77 trillion at constant 2018 prices, or a 2.6 percent expansion from 2024.
National Statistician Claire Dennis Mapa said the quarterly performance was characterized by a widening gap between the livestock and poultry segments and the dominant but struggling crops subsector.
Poultry led the expansion in the three months through December, surging 8.9 percent to ₱78.18 billion. The sector, which accounted for roughly 16 percent of total agricultural value, saw broad gains across nearly all commodities except duck eggs.
On an annual basis, poultry output jumped 9.1 percent to ₱304.71 billion.
The fisheries sector also provided a late-year boost, growing four percent in the fourth quarter to ₱66.13 billion. The rebound accounted for 13.6 percent of the quarter's total value, though it was not enough to pull the subsector into positive territory for the entire year.
Annual fisheries production fell 0.3 percent to ₱233.66 billion amid persistent challenges in maritime and inland production earlier in the year.
Livestock production followed a similar trajectory of quarterly recovery amid long-term headwinds. The segment grew one percent in the fourth quarter to ₱68.42 billion, buoyed by a 1.6 percent increase in hog production.
However, the livestock sector’s full-year output contracted 2.3 percent to ₱246.42 billion, as the industry continues to navigate recovery from animal diseases and shifting market dynamics.
The gains in animal protein were nearly erased by a 2.5 percent contraction in crop production, which fell to ₱274.30 billion in the fourth quarter.
As the bedrock of the nation's food security, crops still represent 56.3 percent of total agricultural value. The decline was largely driven by a 5.2 percent drop in the value of palay, or unmilled rice, which remains the country’s most politically sensitive staple.
Despite the year-end slump, the crop sector managed a 2.8 percent increase for the full year, totaling ₱986.81 billion.
