An ongoing offshore earthquake swarm off Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat produced six strong tremors measuring magnitude 5 and above on Jan. 28, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The Jan. 28 earthquakes included two magnitude 5.5 tremors, as well as events measuring magnitude 5.9, 5.4, 5.2, and 5.1.
Phivolcs said the swarm began at 10:52 p.m. on Jan. 19 and has generated a total of 1,646 weak to moderate earthquakes as of 4 p.m. on Jan. 28.
Of these, 507 were plotted, meaning they were recorded by at least three seismic monitoring stations, with magnitudes ranging from 1.1 to 5.9.
Meanwhile, 63 were felt and assigned corresponding intensity levels.
Phivolcs reminded the public to remain prepared for earthquakes and to practice the standard safety procedure of “duck, cover, and hold.”
Coastal residents were also advised to stay alert for possible signs of a local tsunami, including strong ground shaking, sudden changes in sea level, and unusual roaring sounds from the sea.
Phivolcs said it continues to monitor the offshore earthquake swarm 24/7.
