A motor yacht caught fire off Tingloy, Batangas on Tuesday morning, Jan. 27, the Philippine Coast Guard said (PCG).
Seven crew members of motor yacht “M/Y Allusive” were rescued by concerned individuals after the vessel went up in flames while sailing in waters off Tingloy.
Based on the initial investigation by the Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog, M/Y Allusive was traveling in convoy with another motor yacht, M/Y Neptimus 3. The vessels had departed Puerto Galera and were headed to Punta Fuego in Nasugbu, Batangas to join a yacht sailing event.
However, a personnel of the Coast Guard Sea Marshal Unit–Southern Tagalog onboard a transiting passenger vessel spotted smoke and flames coming from the yacht around 7:35 a.m.
The sighting was immediately reported to the Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog for immediate response.
The PCG said the crew members of M/Y Allusive abandoned the yacht and were evacuated by the crew of M/Y Neptimus 3.
The fire was believed to have started in the engine room of the yacht and the suspected cause of the incident was electrical failure.
The yacht was later towed toward the shoreline as authorities assessed it posed no hazard to navigation.
Meanwhile, the rescued crew members were brought to Batangas Port for medical assessment.
The PCG said it continues to monitor the situation to ensure maritime safety and to address any possible environmental concerns.
