The Philippine National Police advised foreign nationals visiting the country to strictly follow the country’s laws to prevent troubles that include legal consequences following the arrest of another Russian vlogger.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said that foreign visitors have the obligations to not only follow the law but also observe cultural sensitivity in the areas they are visiting.
“The Philippine National Police reminds our foreign visitors to respect the laws of our country. As law enforcers, we take violations of our laws seriously and we are determined to hold accountable those who would defy and disrespect not only our laws but also our culture and our people,” said Nartatez
He issued the statement after the recent arrest of Nikita Chekhov, a Russian content creator who gained notoriety after uploading videos filmed at Bonifacio High Street in Taguig City where he claimed he intended to spread human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) during his stay in the country.
Subsequent medical examinations revealed that Chekhov tested non-reactive for HIV and negative for other related illnesses.
Despite the negative test results, the PNP took swift action due to the nature of his threats.
Nartatez vowed that the PNP would assist other agencies in monitoring the activities of foreigners to determine if their actions are in accordance with Philippine laws.
“Filipinos are known for hospitality and this is what foreigners love about us,” said Nartatez.
“But we in the Philippine National Police will not allow that these are abused and taken advantage of, and we are determined to teach those who mock and disrespect us a lesson,” he added.
Nartatez said the police force remains vigilant in its duty to protect the public from those who ignore and defy the country's legal system.
