Korean singer Rain apologizes to deaf fan after calling her out at Taiwan concert
Korean singer Rain apologized to a deaf fan after he called her out for not dancing at his concert in Taipei, Taiwan on Jan. 17.
The 43-year-old singer held his Still Raining Tour at the Taipei Arena, the last stop of his concert tour.
During the concert in Taiwan, Rain urged the audience to respond and noticed the female fan in front of the stage taking a video.
Rain gestured the audience to be quiet, pointed to the fan and asked her, “Why aren’t you dancing?”
The female fan pointed a finger to her ear, kept smiling and continued to take a video. Rain counted, “One, two, three, four” and gestured for the fan to respond. Rain felt frustrated and stomped his foot when she didn't.
On Jan. 19, the fan with the username Annsimmi commented on Rain’s Instagram post about the Taiwan concert to explain that she is deaf. She said she and two other deaf friends went to the concert to watch Rain.
“It's not that I didn't want to dance, it's that I didn't understand what Rain and the translator were saying at all. Because I have a hearing impairment, I need lip reading or real-time subtitles to help me,” she wrote.
She added, “I was so surprised to be called out by Rain that day. I thought Rain wanted me to sing 'la la la,' so I sang it really hard for the first time. He wasn't satisfied and stomped his foot, then called me again. I saw him make a ‘UP UP‘ gesture and thought he wanted me to sing higher. I even thought I didn't sing high enough and said sorry to him!!”
“Oh my god!! Afterwards, I realized why I didn't use sign language with Rain! It was so funny!! I didn't want him to misunderstand me as a disobedient fan. The three of us are hearing impaired. Because we love Rain's dancing, and he's usually funny but is a very family-oriented man, we went to Kaohsiung and Taipei Arena together to show our support, even though we couldn't understand him (We went 20 years ago too),” she said.
After seeing her post, Rain replied and apologized.
“Hello!!!! It was so nice to see you. First of all, I'm really sorry, I didn't know you couldn't hear me. It was my fault for not being considerate enough,” he said.
He added, “Happy birthday! Although this little incident happened, we have a wonderful memory because of it. This experience made me realize that I need to be more careful in all aspects of my performances in the future. Thank you so much for coming to the show, I was very touched.”
“Although we couldn't hear each other's voices on stage, and couldn't understand the meaning of each other's words, I saw your warm eyes, and that sincere encouragement and genuine gaze. Love you all, thank you,” he said.
