IT'S THE SMALL THINGS
As the Manila Bulletin celebrates its 126th anniversary on Feb. 2nd, here is an open letter to the newspaper that has not only shared unbiased views, but that has also given countless opportunities, and jobs throughout more than 12 decades.
Dearest Manila Bulletin,
As you celebrate your 126th birthday, I would like to congratulate you, and everyone behind this newspaper for more than 12 decades of not only sharing news, current events, opinions, and the like, but for the many jobs, stories and opportunities you have shared – mine included. The Manila Bulletin does not only keep its readers informed, but inspired.
Back in 2014, I was given a space in this most prestigious newspaper where every week since (with a few many breaks in between) I have had the honor of sharing stories of my choice which basically ranged in anything and everything under the sun. From tidbits and nuggets of inspiration I would find in my everyday life, to highlighting budding brands and new found joys, to a space that subconsciously allowed me to unravel my thoughts during lockdown in the pandemic, to random ramblings during weeks when I could not really find anything to write about, this space has not only given me the opportunity to share my thoughts, but it is one that has grown with me – from a fresh graduate, to a full-time social advocate, budding artist, married woman, and now a mother – as my world shifted, so did my opinions. But what constantly remained, even in times when I was delinquent and did not give time, was the opportunity, and the space to share. Every single article, and every single time, this family has always warmly welcomed me, and my unsolicited thoughts with open arms.
Manila Bulletin is an institution. And this institution, is an inspiration. It has outlived many, has spanned generations, gone through all the eras, has covered history, and history that has repeated itself. Manila Bulletin in and of itself is an integral part of Philippine history that has seen the country in all states, shapes and forms. To be but a part, and a contributor of an institution is an honor of a lifetime. And I will never forget how Manila Bulletin took a risk on me without any experience whatsoever. It was, and every piece I write will continue to be a golden opportunity I do not take lightly. For that, I am forever grateful.
Thank you, Manila Bulletin, for being a part of my life. For seeing, and helping me grow. For giving me a free hand, and a safe space where I can let my thoughts flow, and my voice be heard. As we continue to celebrate this monumental year, I will share with you more stories that inspire, more successes that are worth shouting out, and more thoughts that maybe years from now I can look back at and gasp at what it was I was thinking. You have been a scrapbook of sorts – not only of mine, but for every Filipino, and every reader, who has turned your pages, and cut out some clippings. You are a time capsule, history that writes itself everyday, and a big part of who I, and many others are today. Cheers to many, many more years! Mabuhay at Maraming Salamat!
