LPA east of Mindanao to dissipate; amihan, shear line to persist — PAGASA
The low-pressure area (LPA01b) east of Mindanao is expected to dissipate in the coming hours, while the northeast monsoon and shear line will continue to influence weather across several parts of the country, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said on Saturday, Jan. 24.
PAGASA weather specialist Daniel James Villamil said the LPA was last located 690 kilometers east of Davao City and is expected to weaken and merge with the shear line later in the day.
He explained that the merging is likely as the LPA dissipates in the coming hours.
The shear line, a weather system formed by the collision of cold northeasterly winds (amihan) and warm easterly winds will bring cloudy and rainy weather over the eastern sections of Visayas and Mindanao.
Cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms are expected over Caraga, Davao Region, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Camiguin, and Misamis Oriental.
Villamil said the amihan will continue to bring cooler air and light rains over other parts of the country.
Cloudy skies with light amihan rains may persist over Cagayan Valley, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, the rest of Eastern Visayas, the rest of Northern Mindanao, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Aurora, Quezon, Marinduque, Romblon, and Oriental Mindoro.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country are expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the amihan.
Based on PAGASA’s monitoring, the top 10 areas with the lowest early morning temperatures on Saturday were Baguio City (10.8°C), San Ildefonso, Bulacan (17°C), Basco, Batanes (17.2°C), Tanay, Rizal (17.2°C), Laoag City, Ilocos Norte (17.5°C), Abucay, Bataan (18.1°C), Malaybalay, Bukidnon (18.3°C), Casiguran, Aurora (19°C), Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (19.1°C), and Clark International Airport in Mabalacat, Pampanga (19.2°C).
Villamil said the shear line will continue to affect eastern Visayas and Mindanao, while the amihan will persist over the rest of the country, on Sunday, Jan. 25.
From Monday to Wednesday, Jan. 26 to 28, cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms are expected over Visayas and Bicol Region.
Villamil said the effect of the amihan may slightly weaken in the coming days, but rainfall is likely to intensify in some areas due to the shear line.
He warned that heavier rains are expected in parts of Southern Luzon, Visayas, and eastern Mindanao, which could lead to landslides and flash floods.
