No tsunami threat amid Sultan Kudarat quake swarm — Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said it has not issued any advisory warning of an imminent tsunami or calling for the evacuation of coastal communities despite the continuing earthquake swarm near Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat.
An earthquake swarm is defined as a short-lived sequence of minor to light earthquakes, showing no identifiable large event or main shock.
Phivolcs reassured the public that it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates should any significant developments occur.
From Jan. 19 to 23, Phivolcs reported a total of 765 earthquakes in the area, with magnitudes ranging from 1.4 to 5.2.
Of these, 234 tremors were plotted, meaning they were recorded by at least three seismic monitoring stations.
Meanwhile, only 30 were felt and assigned corresponding intensity values.
In its advisory, Phivolcs explained that although the number of quakes is high, there is currently no evidence suggesting an immediate threat to coastal communities.
However, residents are reminded to remain vigilant and follow standard earthquake safety protocols, and continue to monitor Phivolcs’ updates.
