Mayon Volcano, which remains under Alert Level 3, recorded 253 rockfall events, one volcanic earthquake, and one episode of ongoing tremor over a 24-hour monitoring period from 12 a.m. on Jan. 24 to 12 a.m. on Jan. 25, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The agency further recorded 44 pyroclastic density currents at the volcano during the same monitoring period.
Phivolcs stated that sulfur dioxide emissions from Mayon Volcano were measured at 2,327 tonnes per day on Jan. 24.
The agency said the crater glow was fairly visible to the naked eye.
The plume, according to Phivolcs, reached around 600 meters above the crater and showed moderate emission drifting southwest and northeast.
Ground deformation data indicate that the volcano’s edifice remains inflated, the agency said.
Phivolcs warned the public to stay out of the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and avoid unauthorized entry into the Extended Danger Zone (EDZ), adding that aircraft are not allowed to fly near the volcano.
It noted that under Alert Level 3, possible hazards include rockfalls, landslides or avalanches, ballistic fragments, lava flows and lava fountaining, pyroclastic density currents, moderate explosions, and rainfall-induced lahars.
