The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescued a distressed fisherman after his boat malfunctioned in the waters off Hornos Point in Mariveles, Bataan on Thursday, Jan. 22.
The PCG said that the fisherman, a 35-year-old resident of Barangay Biyaan, Mariveles, sustained a first-degree burn on his right thigh after coming into contact with the boat's engine exhaust pipe.
Initial investigation showed that the crew of BRP Cape San Agustin (MRRV-4408) was en route to Bajo de Masinloc to conduct a maritime patrol when it spotted the fisherman waving his hands and signaling distress with red flags.
The crew immediately deployed its rigid hull inflatable boat to render assistance.
According to the PCG, the boat’s engine malfunctioned so Coast Guard personnel tried to restart it.
However, they discovered that the portside outrigger had become loosened, making the boat inoperable.
After discovering the fisherman’s injuries, the PCG rendered first aid treatment and psychosocial support through an onboard medical team.
The BRP Cape San Agustin then coordinated with Coast Guard Station Bataan and Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Mariveles for support.
BRP Cape San Agustin proceeded to Mariveles Harbor and turned over the rescued fisherman to CGSS Mariveles for further assistance and monitoring.
