DAVAO City will host the BYD IRONMAN Davao 70.3 in March.
The Davao City government, in partnership with Sunrise Events, Aboitiz, and other major sponsors, formally launched preparations for the BYD IRONMAN 70.3 Davao following a ceremonial signing with sponsors on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 22, in Davao City.
Scheduled for March 22, the upcoming race marks the fifth staging of the IRONMAN 70.3 in the city.
Organizers said the event will once again bring together elite athletes, local stakeholders, and community-based activities, further cementing Davao City’s growing reputation as an international sports destination.
City Administrator Lawyer Francis Mark Layog said the triathlon contributes to the city’s vibrancy while projecting Davao onto the global sporting stage.
He added that coordination among city offices is already underway to ensure the event proceeds smoothly.
Layog noted that the city’s safety and security cluster is intensifying preparations, notably in crowd control, emergency response, and public safety, to safeguard both participants and spectators.
He said the cluster is on round-the-clock readiness to ensure a peaceful and orderly race day.
In a message delivered by Layog, Mayor Sebastian Duterte said the IRONMAN 70.3 will be among the major highlights of the Araw ng Dabaw celebrations in March, drawing both first-time participants and veteran triathletes, as well as visitors from different parts of the country and abroad.
The mayor said the city aims to welcome guests with Dabawenyo hospitality while promoting camaraderie in line with the celebration of Davao City’s charter anniversary.
Duterte also announced the return of the Tribung Maisugon Award, which recognizes the city’s 11 ethnolinguistic groups, as part of efforts to highlight cultural diversity and unity during the international sporting event.
Organizers said the swim, bike, and run courses will be entirely within Davao City, featuring key landmarks such as the Davao Coastal Road, Talomo Bay, and views of Mount Apo.
