Fugitive businessman Charlie “Atong’’ Ang could be hiding in Cambodia and nearby areas if indeed he was able to slip out of the country, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla said on Thursday, Jan. 22.
Remulla explained that Ang was able to establish connections with counterparts in Cambodia after the Philippine government banned Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) and online sabong.
“According to reports, he has operations of online sabong based in Cambodia so perhaps he was able to set up his networks there,” said Remulla.
Ang’s access to Cambodia, according to Remulla, was confirmed by Julie Patidongan, a whistleblower in the missing sabungeros case who used to be a loyal partner of the wanted businessman.
Tightening the noose
Remulla said they are currently working for the cancellation of the passport of Ang, although he is expected to use it.
Aside from passport cancellation, he said the government is now working to freeze all his assets.
Ang is currently carrying a P10 million bounty after he went into hiding when the court issued an arrest warrant against him for cases of kidnapping with homicide and kidnapping with serious illegal detention.
Guns
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, Ang’s lawyer surrendered five of the six firearms registered to him.
His lawyer Gabriel Villareal said the move was in compliance with the rules and regulations on gun ownership, adding that the guns were turned over to the Mandaluyong City Police .
“This is in faithful compliance with the foregoing directives, and without prejudice to remedies available to him under the law,” said Villareal.
“Our client has peacefully surrendered the following firearms through his duly authorized representative at the Mandaluyong Police Station, the nearest police station to his residence,” he added.
Those surrendered were a Colt rifle, 5.56 caliber; Glock 9 mm; Sig Sauer 9 mm; Smith & Wesson .38 caliber; and Battle Arms Development (BAD) 9 mm pistol.
Attached in the letter addressed to PNP-FEO acting head Brig. Gen. Jose Manalad were the itemized firearms and acknowledgement receipt from the Mandaluyong City Police.
Earlier, authorities said Ang has six registered firearms that need to be surrendered.
This was acknowledged by Villareal but he was quick to point out that the sixth firearm, a .260 caliber BAD rifle, was missing in October last year He said they already informed the PNP about the missing firearm.
“We attached herewith the affidavit of loss executed by Mr. Ang in October 2025 attesting to the circumstances surrounding the loss of said firearm, as well as the blotter report from the Mandaluyong Police Station,” Villareal said.
PBBMs help
Remulla said that if Ang has indeed escaped the country through the backdoor and is hiding in Cambodia, he will discuss the matter with President Marcos.
“I think that is a matter for the President because he is the chairman of the ASEAN, he has to direct leadership talks so we will bring it out to the President and we will see what he decides to do,” said Remulla.
But he was quick to clarify that the report that Ang already left the country is still being verified.
