The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) continue to work hand in hand with only the finishing touches needed for the upcoming WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio said the venue and overall preparation for the WTA event is at 95 percent, with the workers making sure the bleachers, courts, mixed areas, and surrounding spaces achieve their best look come the tournament.
They also have plans to further improve the venue and make it a premier tennis hub in the future, a way of showing appreciation to Eala, who single-handedly brought the Philippine map on the global tennis stage.
“We are in talks with Philta, because we’re very open to really transforming this again (Rizal Memorial Coliseum) as the premier tennis facility here in the country,” said Gregorio.
“You can just imagine… wala na eh craze na eh, Alex is a craze all over the world, fan ng lahat si Alex, dapat lang gawin natin siyang positive image and she truly deserves that,” she added.
The sprawling Manila facility has catered several stars in the past, most notably in 1989 when Grand Slam champions Björn Borg of Sweden and John McEnroe of the US clashed in an exhibition match at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
The organizers also cleared the area around the courts to achieve a clean look day and night.
