NARTATEZ
BUTUAN CITY – Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said Thursday there is no information that fugitive businessman Charlie "Atong" Ang is hiding in the Caraga region.
Nartatez made the statement in a press conference at the Police Regional Office (PRO)-13 (Caraga) here.
Ang faces kidnapping with homicide charges related to missing cockfighting enthusiasts.
“I ordered the PRO-13 to intensify the manhunt against Atong Ang in the area,” Nartatez said.
He noted that Ang's main business is cockfighting and urged local enthusiasts to help in the search.
“Tulungan natin, baka makita natin, baka nandito ang ating hinahanap na Atong Ang (Let's help, we might find him, maybe the Atong Ang we are looking for is here),” he said.
Nartatez said six of Ang's co-accused have been arrested and that the PNP is using all resources and is coordinating internationally to locate him.
Meanwhile, Nartatez welcomed 50 former New People's Army rebels during his visit here.
The former combatants surrendered last year to different police units in the Caraga region. Nartatez inspected 43 high-powered firearms they turned over.
He was joined by PRO-13 Director Police Brig. Gen. Marcial Mariano Magistrado IV and Agusan del Sur Gov. Santiago Cane Jr. in distributing livelihood packages, financial aid, and food packs to the rebel returnees.
“The government has provided our former rebels with support such as initial capital for livelihood opportunities,” Nartatez said.
Nartatez also held a conference with PRO-13 personnel, emphasizing the PNP mission to enforce law, prevent crime, and ensure public safety.
“It is not enough that our police are seen in the street. Their presence must be felt by the community through proper conduct during patrols and law enforcement.”
