The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is fast-tracking drainage improvement works along Araneta Avenue in Quezon City to curb chronic flooding ahead of the rainy season, with the project targeted for completion by February.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said the works involve dredging along Araneta and E. Rodriguez Avenues to improve water flow toward the San Juan River.
He added that illegal structures blocking waterways are being removed to allow unobstructed runoff during heavy rains.
Araneta Avenue has long been one of Metro Manila’s most flood-prone corridors, where severe flooding has repeatedly disrupted traffic and threatened commuter safety.
“Residents here have shared how severe flooding becomes during heavy rains, which is why we started interventions late last year to address the problem before the next rainy season,” Dizon said during an on-site inspection.
DPWH stressed that continuous clearing of waterways is essential to ensure the effectiveness of drainage improvements.
