BACOLOD CITY – Eight people were injured when their van plunged into a creek in Purok Talos, Barangay Igmaya-an, Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
Police Major Ellendie Rebusquillo, Don Salvador Benedicto police chief, said the victims were among 18 people on board a van on their way home to Cadiz City from a birth anniversary celebration in a resort when the accident occurred.
Rebusquillo said the van was driven by 60-year-old man who was the birthday celebrant.
Investigation said the van’s brakes malfunctioned in a blind curve, swerved into the opposite lane, and landed in a creek.
Rebusquillo said the injured were treated and discharged from the hospital.
Police have yet to determine if overloading contributed to the accident. The van’s maximum seating capacity is only 14 passengers.
Rebusquillo reminded motorists to check their vehicles before traveling.
