Senator Pia Cayetano on Wednesday, January 21 welcomed the discovery of natural gas at Malampaya East-1 saying this is great news for the Philippine energy sector.
“This is great news for our energy security, as this discovery will contribute to price stability,” Cayetano said.
She said strengthening indigenous sources of natural gas will help reduce exposure to volatile global fuel prices and supports a more stable power supply over the long term.
Cayetano said she believes the recent discovery will bolster the Philippine Natural Gas Industry Development Act.
Cayetano, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Energy and the principal author and sponsor of the law, said this will provide a clear framework for developing the country’s natural gas industry.
The law directs the Department of Energy (DOE) to undertake comprehensive downstream planning, promote investment, and prioritize indigenous natural gas to reduce import dependence and help moderate power costs over time.
But beyond policy and planning, the senator said what ultimately matters is how energy developments translate into everyday life for Filipino families.
“Iyan naman ang pinakaimportante sa mga kababayan natin (That is what’s important to our people): affordable and reliable energy supply!” she said.
She said natural gas remains an important transition fuel as the country works toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy mix.
Moreover, she said strengthening indigenous energy supply supports the country’s commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) on affordable and clean energy, climate action, and inclusive development, areas she also advances as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, Innovation, and Futures Thinking.
Also, the Malampaya East-1 discovery underscores the importance of sound policy and sustained investment in the energy sector, she said.
“Energy security is not achieved overnight. It requires long-term planning, clear legislation, and responsible development of our own resources so that the benefits reach ordinary Filipinos,” Cayetano said.
