GOSSIP GIRL: When Jose Mari Chan and Martin Nievera give Gerard Salonga and Bituin Escalante a standing ovation
Last Jan. 15, 2026, music lovers packed The Theatre at Solaire for a concert that felt more like a movie in your heart than on a screen. The show was called Film Music Legends: The Scores of John Williams & Hans Zimmer, and it was a night where powerful music met pure emotion. The concert was led by Maestro Gerard Salonga and performed by the Filharmonika Orchestra.

Instead of movie visuals, the audience had only one thing: brilliant live music. That’s right – no films, just the sounds that made people fall in love with those films in the first place. And what music it was!
The first half was all about John Williams — the composer of timeless movie themes like E.T., Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, and Schindler’s List. The orchestra played each piece with such a feeling that the crowd could almost see the movies in their minds. Then came the second half, filled with big, bold scores from Hans Zimmer, including music from Dune, The Lion King, Interstellar, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
One of the real standouts was Bituin Escalante. Known for her strong theatre voice and wide range, she took song parts from Zimmer’s Dune and Gladiator and turned them into moments you could feel deep in your chest. When she was singing, I closed my eyes, imagining a healer singing in the desert.

Here’s where the show gets even more exciting. Two of the Philippines’ most respected music icons — Nievera and Chan — were not just in the audience; they also gave Escalante and Salonga a standing ovation at the end.
That kind of applause doesn’t happen often. It says something: the performance wasn’t just good… it was moving. It reminded people why music can be so powerful — because it speaks to the heart without needing pictures or words.
Watching the orchestra and soloists play live also showed why live music experiences are special. You could hear every little detail — from the whisper of the violins to the booming excitement of the brass. The music filled the space in ways that healed your soul.
In an era of bright lights and video gimmicks, this concert went back to basics: world-class music, played beautifully, with real human emotion. And when legends like Nievera and Chan jumped to their feet? Well… that just made the night unforgettable.
