DTI pushes profitable retailers to list on PSE to fuel growth

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is urging profitable retail companies to go public in a bid to expand their presence in the domestic market and beyond.

Trade Secretary Cristina Roque said she recently met with the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) to outline government programs aimed at supporting the retail industry.

Roque said the DTI and PRA are planning to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to formalize these programs into tangible gains.

One of these initiatives is to encourage retailers, especially those earning high revenues, to consider listing on the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE).

Roque said she is set to meet with PSE President Ramon Monzon to make the listing process more seamless for retail companies.

She added that the DTI is ready to open talks between interested retailers and the PSE to realize this plan.

“If they want to go to the stock exchange, we can assist them with that,” she told reporters.

Roque noted that during her meeting with PRA, which counts among its members executives of the country’s leading retailers, some are already “prepared” to go public while others are “interested.”

The Secretary said going public will inject the necessary capital for businesses to expand their reach in the country and even abroad.

“It’s just more of the possibilities and the opportunities that the government has for them, so their business can truly grow, and they can create jobs,” she added.

If not at the PSE, Roque said the government can help retail companies grow through the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises to Maximize Opportunities for Reinvigorating the Economy (CREATE MORE) Act, which grants fiscal incentives, among other benefits.

She said they can also help businesses expand abroad through the DTI’s Foreign Trade Service Corps (FTSC), which has 29 posts across 21 countries.

Further, the DTI is also looking to help retailers promote sustainability and reduce the environmental impact of their products amid the growing shift toward more green-oriented policies worldwide.

Beyond the retail industry, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) earlier called on technology companies to also go public to breathe new life into the local bourse.

DICT Secretary Henry Rhoel Aguda said last October that sentiment in other countries’ stock markets is on the upswing, partly because of tech firms fueling high capitalization.

He cited the likes of Grab Philippines and Globe Fintech Innovations Inc. (Mynt) among companies that should consider initial public offerings (IPOs) at the PSE.
