The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) led the opening of the country’s first sensory laboratory at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City, to provide a disability-inclusive space for persons with sensory sensitivities.

Speaking at the launch on Jan. 19, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian welcomed the facility as a concrete move to make public spaces more accessible to persons with disabilities, particularly those with autism and sensory sensitivities.

“At the DSWD, our mandate is to protect the welfare of every Filipino, especially the most vulnerable. That includes ensuring that the various needs of persons with disabilities are actively considered in the planning of our programs, services, communities and public spaces. The SM sensory lab aligns strongly with our vision of an inclusive development where no one is left behind,” Gatchalian said.

The sensory lab is a joint initiative of the DSWD, SM Supermalls, and National Council on Disability Affairs.

The facility is open free of charge to children and adults with autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing disorder, anxiety and other sensory sensitivities.

Designed as a low-stimulation environment, the space features controlled lighting, calming textures and trained staff to assist users.

Gatchalian said the careful planning behind the project shows a growing understanding of the needs of the neurodiverse community.

“This initiative is made more meaningful by careful planning, as evidenced by the presence of trained staff in the actual design minimizing visual overstimulation, and in the partnerships with organizations that truly understand the needs of the neurodiverse community,” he added.

The launch coincided with the opening day of the 30th National Autism Consciousness Week, observed from Jan. 19 to 25, with the theme “Mula Kamalayan Tungo sa Gawa: Pag-unlad ng Autism-OK Philippines (From awareness to action: advancing an autism-friendly Philippines).”

Gatchalian said inclusive facilities such as the sensory lab help families participate more fully in everyday life.

“Inclusive spaces like the SM sensory lab allow families to experience everyday life with greater ease and confidence. Gone will be the days when you would rather stay at home because of fear that your child might not be able to control themselves in public spaces,” he said.

During the event, the DSWD, NCDA and SM Supermalls signed a memorandum of agreement to formalize the rollout of the project.

Under the agreement, DSWD will provide technical assistance and disability support guidance, SM Supermalls will handle operations and site development, and NCDA will assign licensed social workers and trained staff while ensuring compliance with disability-inclusive standards.
