PEOPLE float at sea after their boat sank in Tawi-Tawi on Monday.
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Twelve people were rescued after their boat sank in the sea of Simunul and Bongao municipalities in Tawi-Tawi province on Monday, Jan. 19.
The Philippine Coast Guard said they were among the 50 passengers of M/L Sitti Nur that departed Manok Mangkaw Pier in Simunul on Monday morning.
The vessel was battered by huge waves after departing from the port. They floated and battled surging waves for up to two hours before being rescued by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office. Some were rescued by boats passing by the area.
Survivors accused vessel operators of maritime violations due to the lack of life vests, saying they were forced to use various materials like plastic bags as improvised flotation devices.
This was documented by passenger Dutch Sarail and other accounts on social media who posted the passengers' horrific experience of fighting for survival while floating at sea.
Five of the 12 passengers are being treated for intensive physical and emotional trauma.
This is the second such incident in Tawi-Tawi. Last Friday, 30 passengers were rescued at sea after another motor launch, the M/L Nurdia, was found drifting with a broken rudder.
The PCG is investigating the incident.
