PCG records 3rd fatality due to TD 'Ada' in Surigao City

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Monday, Jan. 19, that one more fatality due to Tropical Depression Ada was reported in Surigao City, bringing the death toll to three.
PCG spokesperson Capt. Noemie Cayabyab said a motorboat carrying 12 individuals capsized in the vicinity waters of Barangay Nonoc on Jan. 18.
“[Eleven] individuals [were] rescued by [a] passing motorbanca on the same date while [one] [was] reported casualty,” she said, noting that the casualty refers to fatality.
Earlier, two individuals were reported dead due to a landslide in Matnog, Sorsogon, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
The third fatality reported by the PCG will be validated by the NDRRMC, the Council clarified.
Meanwhile, the PCG said two other motorboats also capsized due to the impact of Ada in Southern Leyte and Surigao City.
One of the motorboats was carrying two crew members and nine passengers when it was knocked over by huge waves while traversing the waters between Limasawa Island and Padre Burgos in Southern Leyte on Jan. 17.
The second one was carrying nine individuals, including the boat operator, when it overturned after being battered by waves in the vicinity waters of Brgy. Nonoc, Surigao City also on the same day.
Fortunately, all crew members and passengers of both ill-fated vessels were rescued by passing motorboats, the PCG said.
260K individuals affected
The NDRRMC said 78,875 families or 260,600 individuals were affected by Ada in 398 barangays in Bicol (Region 5) and Caraga (Region 13).
Of this, around 33,000 individuals were displaced, including 16,322 individuals who were sheltered in 273 evacuation centers. Others were staying with the homes of their friends or relatives.
A total of 80 road sections and three bridges were also affected in Albay. Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Sorsogon.
Power supply was also interrupted in four areas in Sorsogon, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands.
One area in Leyte, namely the municipality of Babatngon, suffered from water supply interruption, according to the NDRRMC.
No more stranded
On the other hand, there were no more stranded passengers in seaports nationwide as sea travel suspensions in areas affected by the storm have already been lifted due to improved weather.
“As we speak, wala na po tayong reported nsstranded na pasahero sa lahat ng pantalan (we no longer have reported stranded passengers in all ports),” Cayabyab said.
