The European Union is introducing the Entry/Exit System (EES) to modernize border checks across the Schengen Area, making travel faster, safer and more efficient.
Instead of traditional passport stamps, the EES will use digital records and biometric checks, including fingerprints and facial scans, to register entries and exits.
The system is expected to speed up border crossings, reduce identity fraud, automatically detect overstays and strengthen security across 29 participating countries.
The rollout begins Oct. 12, 2025, with full implementation expected by April 2026.
During the transition period, some borders may continue issuing passport stamps, so travelers are advised to allow extra time when crossing.
With the EES, Europe moves from ink stamps to smart technology, aiming to ensure smoother journeys and enhanced protection for all.
