DILG eyes permanent relocation for 1,000 families living within Mayon danger zone

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is eyeing the permanent relocation of around 1,000 families staying within the danger zone of the Mayon Volcano in Albay.
In a statement, the DILG said it is looking for a shift toward long-term safety measures for communities affected by the activity of Mayon Volcano, with emphasis on permanent relocation rather than repeated emergency evacuations.
DILG Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic’’ Remulla said permanent relocation remains the priority to prevent repeated displacement.
With the need to permanently relocate around 1,000 families within the two kilometer zone, Remulla admitted that a wider danger radius would have a significant effect in Albay.
Remulla is expected to visit Albay within the week to inspect the various proposed relocation sites for the evacuees.
Remulla assured that the DILG continues to coordinate with the local government units (LGUs) to ensure preparedness and community safety as long-term solutions are put in place.
