Tropical Storm Ada (international name: Nokaen) has weakened into a tropical depression as it continued to move away from Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday, Jan. 19.
As of 5 a.m., the center of Tropical Depression Ada was located 380 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora.
It was moving north-northeastward at 10 kilometers per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph, down from its previous intensity of 65 kph winds and 80 kph gusts.
PAGASA said Ada is expected to move generally northeastward within the day before following a looping track over the sea east of Luzon.
Continuous dry air entrainment from the northeast monsoon, or “amihan,” is expected to cause further weakening, and the weather bureau said the system may be downgraded into a low pressure area (LPA) by Wednesday, Jan. 21, or possibly earlier.
No areas are currently under tropical cyclone wind signals, but PAGASA warned that the amihan and the periphery of Ada may still bring strong to gale-force wind gusts, especially in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds.
On Monday, these conditions may be experienced over Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Ilocos Norte, Abra, Aurora, Polillo Islands, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Northern Samar.
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, strong to gale-force gusts may affect Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Abra, Aurora, Quezon, Marinduque, Romblon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, and Surigao del Sur.
PAGASA said Ada’s trough or extension may continue to bring scattered rains and thunderstorms over Bicol Region, Aurora, Quezon, and Northern Samar, with possible flash floods or landslides in areas that may experience moderate to, at times, heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, the amihan may bring light rains over the Cordillera Administrative Region and Cagayan Valley, while the Ilocos Region may experience isolated light amihan rains.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country are expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
