The local government of Valenzuela City has tracked down the truck driver who was seen driving “recklessly” along Sapang Bakaw Road in Barangay Lawang Bato at around 8 p.m. on Jan. 16.
The footage went viral on Facebook which showed the truck swerving dangerously between lanes and overtaking other vehicles at high speed, forcing several motorists to slow down and pull over to avoid a collision.
Next day, Jan. 17, a representative of the trucking service company, along with the driver, appeared before the Valenzuela City Police Station in response to official notices and to formally turn over the driver, identified as Nelson, 41, to authorities.
“Hindi po namin tino-tolerate ang mga ganitong kaskasero at bastos na driver sa aming mga lansangan (We do not tolerate these kind of reckless and irresponsible drivers in our roads),” Mayor Weslie “Wes” Gatchalian said in a press conference on Sunday, Jan. 18.
LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Marcus Lacanilao issued a show cause order and directed authorities to take appropriate action against the driver and the vehicle owner.
A 90-day preventive suspension of the driver’s license was ordered while the investigation is ongoing. The truck was also placed under alarm status.
Mayor Gatchalian stressed the importance of road safety in Valenzuela, noting the city as a hub for goods and storage facilities.
“Valenzuela City is home to about 15,000 industries, warehouses, and commercial establishments. This is the reason why we are very strict and we really put order on our streets,” Gatchalian said.
“Alam po naming dinadaanan kami ng maraming trucks of various sizes every day, kaya mas mahigpit talaga kami pagdating sa traffic enforcement (We know that trucks of various sizes pass through our city everyday that’s why we’re very strict in our traffic enforcement),” he added.
Police have since turned over custody of the case to the LTO. The Valenzuela City government has also recommended the temporary closure and suspension of operations of United Steel Master Manufacturing Corporation pending the outcome of the investigation.
Mayor Gatchalian reminded trucking service companies to exercise stricter screening and supervision of their drivers.
“Responsibilidad ng mga kumpanya na siguraduhin na ang kanilang mga driver ay disiplinado at sumusunod sa batas trapiko (It is the responsibility of the companies to ensure that their drivers are disciplined and follows traffic rules),” he said.
