PCG mourns officer slain in Zamboanga Sibugay ambush

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has expressed grief over the passing of one of its officers who was ambushed by an unidentified gunman in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.
Lieutenant Junior Grade Glennick Ytang, station commander of Coast Guard Station Zamboanga Sibugay under Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao, was shot dead while inside his white pickup truck parked along a busy street in Purok Sentro, Brgy. Veterans Village on Jan. 15
“The men and women of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) express their condolences to the bereaved loved ones of Lieutenant Junior Grade Glennick Ytang,” PCG spokesperson Capt. Noemie Cayabyab said in a statement on Friday, Jan. 16.
Ytang, 32, was a member of the Coast Guard Officers’ Course Class 26-2020 “Hiraya Masiklab.”
The PCG vowed to work with authorities to ensure justice for the slain officer.
Investigators said Ytang had just stopped at a roadside coffee shop before the attack when an unidentified man approached him and fired several shots before escaping.
Ytang suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene.
Police recovered six empty shell casings from a pistol at the crime scene.
Witnesses told authorities that two other men were seen serving as lookouts while the gunman carried out the attack.
Personnel from the Ipil Municipal Police Station and provincial intelligence units launched a manhunt to identify and arrest the gunman.
Meanwhile, Philippine Army intelligence units in Zamboanga Sibugay were also ordered to assist in tracking down the suspect.
As of press time, the PCG remains in close coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to facilitate a thorough investigation and uphold justice for the bereaved family.
Investigators said no suspect has been identified and no motive has been established.
Police were reviewing security camera footage from nearby establishments to help solve the case.
“Thank you for your service, LTJG Ytang,” Cayabyab said.
