GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME? "Cory in the House" for the Nintendo DS has been the center of an online viral campaign to name it the best video game of all time.
Beating the likes of "Metal Gear Solid," "Silent Hill," and the "Witcher" franchise, it seems "Cory in the House" for the Nintendo DS is well on its way to becoming one of the highest-rated video games of all time. How did this happen?
Currently standing at third under Metacritic's top user-reviewed games, the unassuming title managed to reach a score of 9.3 and peaked at second place with 5,003 user ratings. It ties with Hideo Kojima's "Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater" and its expansion, "Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence." Meanwhile, the Video Game Awards Game of the Year awardee "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" sits at the top spot with a score of 9.6 from over 23,6772 user ratings. The 2008 handheld title owes its popularity to an Internet meme started by the controversial online imageboard 4chan.
As early as 2013, 4chan users selected the Disney game as a satirical pick for best video game of all time. This inside joke would later spread to other online circles like Reddit. Users would then flood positive reviews on sites like Amazon and GameFAQ to bump up their score. This viral campaign has already led to the secondhand video game market bumping up its prices for the title, with copies being listed for as high as $400 (₱23,772) on eBay.
RISING UP Metacritic's user reviews currently place the Disney game as third on its best user-reviewed games of all time, with a score of 9.3.
What on earth is "Cory in the House?"
"Cory in the House" is a short-lived Disney sitcom, starring Kyle Massey, that ran from 2007 to 2008. It's a spin-off of the popular "That's So Raven" series that centered around psychic Raven Baxter, played by Raven-Symoné. The show follows Raven's little brother, Cory, living in the White House after their father managed to land a job as a chef for the President of the US. "Cory in the House" also finds itself often jokingly referred to as the "best anime ever" by Internet users. The show found itself cut short of a third season after the Writers' Guild went on strike in 2008. Kyle suffering from an injury after a stunt filming mishap on the show is also attributed as one of the reasons the show was quietly pulled off the shelf.
Where is Kyle Massey now?
While Kyle isn't as active anymore, his last prominent roles were voice acting gigs for Nickelodeon's "Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and Cartoon Network's "Mighty Magiswords." He was also on six episodes of Omar Benson's "Millennials." The star also faced controversy in 2021 after news broke that he had been charged with one count of immoral communication with a minor after allegedly sending nude photos to a minor. He denied the allegations, stating it was an extortion attempt.
