Heads up, motorists! NLEX toll rates are going up on Jan. 20
Motorists will be paying higher fees when traversing through the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) beginning Tuesday, Jan. 20, following the government’s approval of the tollway’s hike adjustment.
In a statement, NLEX Corp. said it was permitted by the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) to adjust its toll by ₱6 and ₱0.26 per kilometer in the open and closed system, respectively.
Under the now toll matrix, motorists in the open system will pay an additional ₱6 for Class 1 vehicles, ₱12 for Class 2, and ₱16 for Class 3.
NLEX’s open system runs from the cities of Navotas, Valenzuela, and Caloocan to Marilao, Bulacan.
Meanwhile, the closed system covers the portion between Bocaue, Bulacan, and Sta. Ines, Mabalacat City, Pampanga, including the Subic-Tipo segment.
Motorists passing through the full length of NLEX, from Metro Manila to Pampanga, will see an increase of ₱24 for Class 1, ₱60 for Class 2, and ₱72 for Class 3.
NLEX Corp. said the toll hike represents the second and final tranche of the approved periodic toll adjustment, originally due in 2023.
The scheduled increase was previously deferred and later implemented in two tranches to mitigate the impact on expressway users.
The tollway operator said these adjustments are necessary to keep NLEX safe, while ensuring the long-term viability of the privately-funded infrastructure investments.
Over the last three years, NLEX Corp. said it has heavily invested in infrastructure projects and improvements to improve the mobility and convenience of motorists.
Notable improvements during the period were the completion of the Subic Freeport Expressway (SFEX) capacity expansion, the Candaba 3rd Viaduct, and road raising of the San Simon area, among others.
NLEX Corp. also implemented system enhancements and equipment upgrades, as well as improvements in roadway lighting and the enhancement of bridges and overpasses.
Currently in the pipeline is the two-kilometer section of the NLEX-C5 Northlink that would extend NLEX from the Mindanao toll plaza to Quirino Highway in Novaliches, Quezon City.
The ₱2.2-billion project, set to open this year, is expected to congest the daily traffic gridlock in Mindanao Avenue.
In addition, NLEX Corp. said it will continue to implement the government's toll rebate program for vehicles transporting agricultural products that are accredited by the Department of Agriculture (DA).
The operator said this is to ensure that the impact of the toll increase on inflation would be minimal.
