Deputy Speaker Antipolo City 1st district Rep. Ronaldo "Ronnie" Puno flatly said Friday, Jan. 16 that he wasn't interested in the House Speakership currently held by Isabela 6th district Rep. Faustino "Bojie" Dy III.
"Hindi ako intersado dyan (I'm not interested in that)," Puno told House reporters in a virtual press conference.
Dy, a member of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), took over as Speaker last Sept. 17.
Since then, rumors have persisted that he was only a transitional Speaker and that he would eventually be replaced, with Puno being the top contender.
"Tingin ko his leadership is very stable and secure. Kami naman ay tumutulong kami to make it stable and secure (I think his leadership is very stable and secure. And we are helping to make it stable and secure)," said Puno, chairman of the National Unity Party (NUP).
"I'm in support of Speaker Bojie Dy. Siguro kaya lumulutang ang pangalan ko dahil alam nila tumutulong ako kay Speaker Bojie Dy (I'm helping Speaker Bojie Dy, perhaps that's why my name is being bandied about)," he noted.
Puno says there may be people who just want to create intrigue, given how tight he is with Dy.
"Alam mo, ang relasyon--kami walang puwang eh saming dalawa ni Speaker Bojie. Ano kami eh, matagal na kaming magkaibigan. More than, tagal na, mayor pa yun, magkaibigan na kami, buong pamilya niya," the Antipolo solon shared.
(You know, there’s no gap in my relationship with Speaker Bojie. We’ve been friends for a long time, since he was still mayor, and our families have been close.)
"At tsaka, alam ninyo, maraming mga syempre nagseselos sa relasyon ko kay Speaker Bojie dahil matagal na kami magkasama. 'Tito Ronnie' ang tawag niya sa akin (And of course, there are many who get jealous of my relationship with Speaker Bojie because we’ve been together for so long. He even calls me ‘Tito Ronnie')," he candidly said.
"So baka may mga naglalagay lang ng intriga dyan, ayoko na patulan Isa kasi ano eh, wala naman talaga, wala talaga (So maybe some people are just stirring up intrigue, but I don’t want to entertain it, because really, there’s nothing there at all)," Puno further said.
