Tropical Depression Ada slightly intensified on Thursday, Jan. 15 as it continued moving over the Philippine Sea east of Mindanao, prompting the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to place 11 areas under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1.
PAGASA said minimal to minor impacts from strong winds are possible in areas under Wind Signal No. 1. These include Sorsogon, southeastern portion of Albay (Rapu-Rapu, Manito, and Legazpi City), Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, eastern portion of Biliran (Maripipi, Kawayan, Culaba, Caibiran, and Cabucgayan), eastern portion of Leyte (Carigara, Barugo, San Miguel, Babatngon, Tacloban City, Tunga, Jaro, Alangalang, Santa Fe, Palo, Dagami, Pastrana, Tanauan, Tabontabon, Julita, Dulag, Tolosa, La Paz, Mayorga, MacArthur, Javier, Abuyog, and Mahaplag), eastern portion of Southern Leyte (Silago, Sogod, Libagon, Saint Bernard, Hinunangan, Hinundayan, Anahawan, San Juan, Liloan, San Ricardo, San Francisco, and Pintuyan), Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur.
PAGASA said the highest wind signal that may be hoisted during the passage of Ada is Signal No. 2.
As of 5 a.m., the center of Tropical Depression Ada was estimated at 385 kilometers east-northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, or 465 kilometers east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte.
The weather disturbance is moving westward at 20 kilometers per hour (kph), packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gusts of up to 70 kph.
It may reach tropical storm category within the day and continue gradually intensifying while moving over the Philippine Sea.
Ada is forecast to generally move northwestward through Sunday, Jan. 18, before turning north-northeastward by Monday, Jan. 19.
On its forecast track, the tropical depression may pass close to Eastern Samar and Northern Samar on Friday, Jan. 16, or early Saturday, Jan. 17, before heading toward Catanduanes, where a close approach is likely on Sunday morning.
PAGASA warned that a further westward shift in the forecast track could result in a possible landfall over Eastern Visayas and Bicol Region.
‘Ada’, ‘amihan’ to bring rains
Over the next 24 hours, Tropical Depression Ada is expected to bring rains with gusty winds over Eastern Samar, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat Islands, while scattered rains are expected over Central Visayas, the rest of Eastern Visayas, the rest of the Caraga region, Davao Oriental, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, and Catanduanes.
PAGASA said the northeast monsoon, locally known as “amihan,” may also bring rains over Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, and Quezon.
Meanwhile, Metro Manila, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and the rest of Cagayan Valley, are expected to experience light monsoon rains.
Isolated light rains brought by the northeast monsoon may prevail over Ilocos Region and the rest of Central Luzon.
