ILOILO CITY – A barangay captain in northern Iloilo province was caught with nearly P 6.5-million worth of suspected shabu in an anti-drug operation on Wednesday.
Authorities identified the suspect as Matt, captain of Barangay Poblacion Tuble in San Dionisio town.
Seized from the 39-year-old barangay official was more than 955 grams of suspected shabu when he was arrested in the neighboring town of Sara.
The Iloilo Police Provincial Office-Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit (IPPO-PDEU) led by Police Major Dadje Delima conducted surveillance against the suspect for a month after receiving information from an informant in Sara.
Matmat reportedly sourced his supply from Estancia town and distributed it in other parts of Iloilo.
Iloilo police chief Police Col. Bayani Razalan lauded operating units for the suspect’s arrest.
“I congratulate our PDEU on this successful anti-illegal drug operation and the arrest of this high-value target, an incumbent punong barangay. Regardless of position or status in society, as long as it is involved in drugs, we will not hesitate to arrest any individual,” said Razalan in a statement on Thursday, Jan. 15.
The suspect is facing charges for violating Republic Act No. 9165 or the Comprehensive Drugs Act of 2002.
