Phoenix has parted ways with head coach Willy Wilson and consultant Jamike Jarin, the team announced on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
The decision came after a tumultuous first conference for the Fuel Masters under Wilson, missing the playoffs with a 3-8 record at the 10th spot of the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup standings.
“After much evaluation, the Phoenix Fuel Masters have amicably parted ways with Head Coach Willy Wilson & Team Consultant Jamike Jarin effective immediately,” the Fuel Masters said in a statement.
“We thank Coach Willy and Jamike for their hard work, commitment, and professionalism through the years and wish them the very best in their future endeavors,” it added.
Wilson was named as head coach of the team just before the season, replacing Jarin who was then moved to the team consultant position.
Though with a young and formidable crew built around Jason Perkins along with Kai Ballungay, Tyler Tio, Ricci Rivero and Kenneth Tuffin, the Fuel Masters seemed to have a hard time adjusting under their new coach.
Phoenix has yet to reveal any details regarding the next coach of the team although College of St. Benilde mentor Charles Tiu has been linked to the job.
Tiu, however, shut down the rumors, noting that he intended to return to the Blazers for the next NCAA season.
