The low-pressure area (LPA) inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) intensified into a tropical depression at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, and was named “Ada,” the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
As of 11 a.m., the tropical depression was located 635 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 55 kph.
Its trough or extension is already bringing scattered rains over Eastern Visayas, Davao Region, Caraga, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, and Bukidnon, PAGASA weather specialist Loriedin dela Cruz-Galicia said.
Ada is forecast to move west-northwestward to northwestward over the next three days.
On its forecast track, it may pass close to or make landfall over Eastern Visayas on Friday, Jan. 16, or early Saturday, Jan. 17.
It is then expected to pass close to or make landfall over Catanduanes on Saturday or Sunday, Jan. 18, before turning generally northeastward over the sea east of Luzon.
PAGASA also said Ada is expected to intensify into a tropical storm within the next 24 hours and will continue to gradually strengthen over the Philippine Sea.
With the LPA now upgraded to a tropical depression, tropical cyclone wind signals have been raised over Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur.
Residents in areas that may be affected are urged to continue monitoring official PAGASA bulletins and advisories, dela Cruz-Galicia added.
Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon or “amihan” will bring cloudy skies with rains over Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Cordillera Administrative Region, and the rest of Cagayan Valley.
Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light amihan rains may prevail over Ilocos Region and the rest of Central Luzon.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to easterlies or localized thunderstorms.
