RABAT
DAVAO CITY – Former Mati City Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat publicly declared her support for Vice President Sara Duterte on Wednesday, Jan. 14, for president in 2028, highlighting their shared roots in Mindanao and praising the programs implemented under the Duterte-led administration.
“I will go for Vice President Sara Duterte. I am from Mindanao, and we come from the same region,” Rabat said during a live interview online. She emphasized that they have seen the positive impact of the programs initiated by the Dutertes.
Rabat’s endorsement comes as early political positioning begins for the 2028 national elections, with potential alliances and endorsements emerging well ahead of the official campaign period.
Rabat refrained from making specific declarations on her own political ambitions for 2028, noting that discussions about candidacy are still premature. “Running in 2028 is an open book. We will cross that bridge when we get there,” she said.
Despite keeping her personal plans undecided, Rabat emphasized that her family remains politically united. “All of the Rabats will remain united in 2028 and beyond.”
Meanwhile, Rabat clarified the status of the Dahican Bamboo Terminal on Wednesday, emphasizing that the project is still under construction and that government payments for the facility have not been fully processed.
Rabat said the terminal, noted for its distinctive bamboo design, remains unfinished and should not be judged as a completed structure.
“The project is not yet complete, and payment is not yet in full,” Rabat said, noting that several key elements of the terminal are still pending installation.
According to Rabat, planned improvements include the construction of comfort rooms and the extension of the terminal bay to better accommodate passengers. These additions are part of the facility’s original design and intended functionality.
She also addressed concerns about flooding and structural stability, explaining that the terminal site was deliberately elevated during construction. “The area was previously below the level of the highway, so it was elevated to avoid flooding.”
Rabat defended the use of bamboo as a primary material, stating that the structure is reinforced and treated to ensure durability.
“The bamboo is treated and supported by a strong foundation made of steel and concrete,” the former mayor said, emphasizing that safety and longevity were prioritized alongside aesthetics.
The Dahican Bamboo Terminal, located near the popular Dahican Beach, is designed to combine practical function with visual appeal for the tourism area. Rabat said the bamboo architecture was a deliberate choice to enhance the site’s coastal charm.
