West Valley Fault traverses 16 barangays in Taguig
Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano announced that 16 out of the city's 38 barangays lie directly along the West Valley Fault.
Cayetano emphasized that residents should be prepared for disasters such as the “Big One” earthquake scenario.
According to a 2016 statement by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the “Big One” refers to an earthquake with a magnitude of no less than 7.2 on the Richter scale.
“The West Valley Fault system is an imaginary line marking the area where the different fault systems are located underground and are actively moving from where a big earthquake may originate,” which “runs through different cities and towns of Bulacan, Rizal, Metro Manila, Cavite, and Laguna.”
Cayetano posted on Facebook, “Mga Taguigeño, alam n’yo po ba kung ang inyong barangay ay dinadaanan o malapit sa West Valley Fault? Ang malakas na lindol o ‘The Big One’ ay maaaring magdulot ng pinsala sa mga bahay at gusali, pagkaantala sa kuryente, tubig, at iba pang mahahalagang serbisyo, pati na rin ng iba’t ibang panganib sa komunidad (Taguigeños, do you know if your barangay is located on or near the West Valley Fault? A strong earthquake or ‘The Big One’ can cause damage to houses and buildings, disruptions to electricity, water, and other essential services, as well as various hazards to the community).”
She warned that, according to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Taguig -- particularly the barangays traversed by the West Valley Fault -- may experience intensity 8 shaking if an earthquake with magnitudes of 6.5 and 7.2 occurs.
Cayetano added that barangays on the West Valley Fault may experience ground cracking, which could cause severe damage and pose risk to life.
In eastern barangays near the Laguna Lake, soft ground may cause subsidence or liquefaction, while western barangays may experience strong shaking depending on the strength of buildings.
The mayor said the 16 barangays in Taguig on the West Valley Fault are:

• Central Bicutan

The other 22 barangays in Taguig are near the West Valley Fault. These are:
