BACOLOD CITY – The remains of 38-year-old Chelamie Dinawanao was transported from Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental to her hometown in Barangay Santiago, Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur on Monday, Jan. 12.
The local government of Sibulan in Negros Oriental, in coordination with the provincial government of Zamboanga del Sur, assisted her family in the transport of her remains.
Dinawanao was allegedly gunned down by Police Staff Sgt. Bonifacio Saycon in a restobar in Barangay Tubtubon, Sibulan, Negros Oriental where the victim was working on Jan. 9. The motive is still under investigation.
Police Capt. Stephen Polinar, Negros Oriental police spokesperson, said the victim had been working in the bar for about two months. He said that police will also provide financial assistance to the victim’s family.
Dinawanao’s mother Lucy, in a radio interview, said she could not believe what happened to her daughter, who was the breadwinner of the family.
Lucy said that she was not able to sleep upon learning of the incident. Chelamie was the fifth among the nine children of Lucy.
She said that Chelamie went to Negros Oriental to look for a job to support their family and her two children. She remembered her as a good and kind daughter.
A criminal complaint for murder was filed against Saycon on Monday over her death.
Aside from Dinawanao, Saycon also allegedly gunned down his three colleagues, including his police chief, in a separate incident, following the bar shooting.
They were part of a group of six officers who went to the bar to celebrate the police chief’s birth anniversary.
