Police seize P8.8-M shabu for Sinulog Festival in Kabankalan

BACOLOD CITY – The Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) seized shabu valued at P8.8 million for distribution at the Sinulog Festival in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental after arresting two high-value drug personalities in a buy-bust operation in this highly urbanized city on Monday, Jan. 12.
The City Drug Enforcement Unit (CDEU) identified the suspects as Tata, 53, of Barangay Mandalagan here, and Anthony, 45, of Kabankalan City.
Police Col. Joeresty Coronica, Bacolod police director, said the CDEU developed the information they received for six weeks.
Coronica said that the operation reduced the supply, which likely came from Mindanao, for the festival.
"This is a challenge for us because illegal drugs has become a livelihood for so many individuals and this also contributes to crimes," Coronica said.
Police Lt. Richard Legada, assistant CDEU chief, said that Tata, the subject of the operation, was identified as a top priority drug personality in the region and No.1 target-listed drug personality in Kabankalan City.
Legada said that Tata was arrested for a drug offense in Kabankalan City in 2015 and was released in 2022.
Police are verifying if Anthony was a member of a drug group operating in the fifth and sixth districts of the province.
Anthony was arrested for a drug offense in 2021 and was released last October.
Both suspects were listed in the barangay anti-drug abuse council in Kabankalan City. They are detained at Police Station 3.
