Police probing motives in Sibulan shootings

BACOLOD CITY – Police are probing possible motives in the murder of three police officers and a woman in Sibulan, Negros Oriental, on Friday, Jan. 9.
One possible motive is personal grudges, police said.
Police Capt. Stephen Polinar, Negros Oriental police spokesperson, said that investigators have yet to determine the extent of any personal animosity linked to the case. “It has to be proven while the case is on trial,” he added.
Speculation circulating on social media pointed to jealousy as an initial motive, but Polinar clarified that investigators have already ruled this out.
He added that police have not released any statement suggesting jealousy as an angle and are unsure where the claims originated.
In a press briefing on Monday, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said they are instead considering severe intoxication and other factors – not jealousy over a woman – as possible reasons behind the incidents.
A Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) has been formed to focus on the probe. However, no further details on the motive have been disclosed while the investigation is ongoing.
Polinar said that the Internal Affairs Service (IAS) has been probing the administrative case of the suspect, Police Staff Sgt. Bonifacio Saycon, who has been charged with murder and multiple murder.
The National Police Commission-Negros Island Region has officially taken cognizance of the administrative investigation and extended their deepest condolences to the families of the victims. The agency vowed a thorough and impartial investigation.
