Apple has chosen Google’s Gemini to power its AI features.
Apple has assured users that no information will be sent to Google and that all processes will go to Apple’s own Private Cloud Compute servers. This would also mean what users will be seeing in the future won’t be Gemini running around in device, but, instead on-device AI features and improved Siri.
This would mean Siri may get that much needed revamp. With Gemini, there will be more on-screen awareness and probably personal context, where the AI will go through your apps to get specific information. For instance, you ask what time is your meeting with your boss, and the AI may check your emails or calendar to find that information.
In a joint statement posted by Google:
“Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year.
After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards.”
When it comes to AI, Apple’s efforts have often been sidelined. But Apple has had AI in its devices with Apple Intelligence, with features that summarizes notifications and helps search for through your wall of Photos, and it’s even got Clean Up, which removes unwanted people and objects from Photos.
Since this is a “multi-year” deal, it shows that Apple won’t be abandoning its efforts in developing its own AI. If anything, the Gemini deal will help Apple stall for more time as they cook their own AI, while staying competitive in an era where everyone talks about AI nonstop.
