1st potential cyclone of 2026 brewing outside PAR — PAGASA
To be named 'Ada' once it develops into tropical depression
PAGASA
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday, Jan. 13 said a low-pressure area (LPA) has formed outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) and may become the first tropical cyclone of 2026.
PAGASA said the LPA was estimated at about 1,100 kilometers east-southeast of southeastern Mindanao as of 8 a.m.
It currently has a “medium chance” of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.
Once it develops into a tropical cyclone inside PAR, it will be given the name “Ada,” the first for 2026, PAGASA weather specialist Chenel Dominguez said.
Dominguez said the weather disturbance is embedded along the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).
She added that if the system strengthens into a tropical cyclone and moves closer to land, it may raise tropical cyclone wind signals over parts of Mindanao and the Visayas.
“Posible ito lumapit sa Caraga at Eastern Visayas. Kapag ito’y naging bagyo, agad din tayong magre-raise ng tropical cyclone wind signal sa ilang bahagi ng Mindanao and Visayas (It may move closer to Caraga and Eastern Visayas. If it becomes a cyclone, we will immediately raise tropical cyclone wind signals over some parts of Mindanao and the Visayas),” Dominguez said.
Significant rainfall is expected to begin affecting the eastern section of Mindanao starting Wednesday, Jan. 14, spreading later to the Visayas and Southern Luzon.
Dominguez warned of possible flash floods and landslides in affected areas and urged added caution among communities along the disturbance’s potential path, including those participating in Sinulog festivities.
Meanwhile, the ITCZ will bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over the Davao Region, while the shear line will continue to cause cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms over Cagayan, Isabela, and Aurora.
The northeast monsoon or “amihan” will bring cloudy skies with light rains over the Cordillera Administrative Region and the rest of Cagayan Valley, and partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains over the Ilocos Region and the rest of Central Luzon.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to easterlies.
