An overheated fryer is being eyed as the cause of a fire that hit a convenience store in Barangay 655, Intramuros, Manila, early Monday morning, Jan. 12, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said.
Based on the initial report, the crew of the convenience store were changing the fryer's oil when it suddenly overheated and caught fire, prompting one of the cashiers to immediately call for help.
The BFP said the fire started at around 3:54 a.m. and was declared fire out at 4:20 a.m.
Baseco Fire Station sub-commander Fire Inspector Jumar Jay Fariñas said the flames intensified as it rose up the chimney after possibly igniting the accumulated oil in it.
“Nagsimula siya sa fryer tapos umakyat sa chimney kaya medyo lumaki 'yung apoy. Parang bigla na lang nagliyab. Hindi pa namin alam kung bakit nagliyab. Siguro may nag-spark doon or hindi malinis, marami nang oil kaya ganun siguro. Kailangan naming tanggalin yung ceiling para makita namin yung loob nung kisame kasi doon po 'yung nagliyab sa taas (The fire started in the fryer and then went up the chimney, so it grew quickly. We are still determining exactly why it caught fire. Maybe something sparked in there or it wasn't cleaned, hence, there was a lot of oil. We had to remove the ceiling so we could see inside it because that's where the fire ignited)," Fariñas said.
He reminded the public to always clean kitchen exhausts and vents to prevent the spread of fire.
“Usually ang chimney, hindi light materials. Gawa po yan sa yero na makapal. Magaapoy lang yun kasi naiipon na yung mga oil doon. Kung hindi siya malinis, tuloy-tuloy yun kung hindi naagapan (Usually chimneys are not made of light materials. It is made of thick iron. It will only catch fire because the oils have accumulated there. If it is not cleaned, it will continue to burn if not extinguished early)," Fariñas explained.
Firefighters said no one was hurt in the incident as all of the store's customers and employees were able to evacuate quickly.
Meanwhile, arson investigators pegged the amount of damage to property to about P160,000.
The investigation is ongoing.
