Nartatez: Reinstatement of Benguet top cop proof of fair probe in PNP
The reinstatement of the provincial police commander of Benguet is proof of fair and impartial investigation in the Philippine National Police (PNP) involving its personnel, a top police official said on Monday, Jan. 12.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr, said that while they are tough against their erring personnel, the process and protocol in the police organization always make sure that due process is observed for the benefit of those who are not engaged in any wrongdoing.
He issued the statement after Police Col. Lambert Suerte was reinstated as the provincial director of the Benguet Police Provincial after the PNP cleared him of any command responsibility in alleged lapses during the investigation into the death of Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Undersecretary Catalina Cabral.
“We always ensure that every officer is given due process, and a fair and impartial investigation. This case proves that accountability is balanced with fairness; our officers must be protected from premature judgments until the facts are fully verified,” said Nartatez.
“This reinstatement also serves as a reminder to our officers that the PNP leadership supports those who act lawfully and responsibly, and we will continue to uphold trust in the organization,” he added.
Suerte and Tuba Municipal Police Station chief Police Maj. Peter Camsol Jr were earlier relieved from their posts due to allegations of lapses in handling the investigation of the death of Cabral last month.
A regional internal review found no misconduct on Suerte’s part and instead held Police Camsol accountable.
The review came in response to public criticism of the initial police actions.
Authorities confirmed there was no foul play in Cabral’s death, citing forensic results, CCTV footage, and witness accounts, though procedural issues at the municipal level will still be addressed.
