Korean singer BoA leaves SM Entertainment after 25 years
Korean singer BoA, who debuted at 13 and led K-pop’s expansion to Japan in the early 2000s, has parted ways with SM Entertainment, which became her agency for 25 years.
“First, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of you, including Jumping BoA [fandom], who have always loved and supported our artist BoA. After extensive and in-depth discussions with BoA, we have agreed to conclude our 25-year partnership with her on December 31,” SM Entertainment announced on Jan. 12.
It added, “BoA, who debuted in 2000 at the age of 13, has continued to pioneer the Korean Wave across Asia, earning the love of global music fans as an ‘icon of international expansion’ and a ‘star of Asia.’ She has also become a role model for countless younger artists leading the K-pop craze.”
BoA, now 39, debuted with the album “ID; Peace B" in 2000.
“As a pioneer and trailblazer, BoA's journey has been marked by dazzling achievements and unparalleled records, thanks to her relentless dedication and passion. From BoA's extraordinary debut, which rewrote Korean pop music history, to her current growth as a No. 1 artist and producer, we cherish every moment and are truly honored to have been a part of her dazzling journey,” it said.
The agency said, “For 25 years, BoA has been the pride, joy, and symbol of SM Entertainment. Although her exclusive contract with us has ended, we hope BoA will continue to shine even brighter as a ‘star of Asia/ by fully demonstrating her capabilities in new activities and challenges.”
“We ask for your continued love and interest in BoA's future. We sincerely hope that BoA, not just as an artist, will continue to support her future and be happy,” it said.
