PNP vows zero tolerance vs immoral acts after fatal bar shooting in Negros Oriental
Following the death of a civilian and three policemen, including a chief of police, in Sibulan, Negros Oriental on Friday evening, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reminded all its personnel to behave and be role model in their respective places of assignment.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said each policeman must always bear in mind that commitment to discipline, professionalism, and ethical conduct as the core foundations of the police service.
“The PNP maintains a policy of zero tolerance for any immoral, illegal, or unethical act that tarnishes the image of the service or undermines public confidence. All PNP personnel are reminded that they are expected to remain physically, emotionally, and psychologically fit to perform their duties at all times,” said Nartatez.
“Any behavior that impairs judgment, weakens control, or poses risk to others is unacceptable. Police authority, particularly the handling of firearms and enforcement powers, must always be exercised with restraint, vigilance, and full accountability,” he added.
Nartatez was apparently disappointed of the confirmed reports that the suspect, a police sergeant assigned to the Sibulan Municipal Police Station, was seen hanging out in a resto bar before he allegedly shot dead a woman inside.
The same policeman, identified in the report as Police Staff Sergeant Bonifacio Saycon, Jr., also shot dead the chief of police of Sibulan town and two others who responded and arrested him.
Nartatez said unit commanders and heads of offices are directed to enforce close supervision, uphold strict discipline, and act decisively on any misconduct.
“The PNP emphasizes that wearing the uniform is a privilege that carries immense responsibility. Discipline, accountability, and integrity are non-negotiable in ensuring that the organization remains worthy of the trust and confidence of the Filipino people,’ said Nartatez.
