The Petro Gazz Angels are taking a leave of absence for this year’s Premier Volleyball League (PVL) season, despite a banner 2025 campaign that saw them win the All-Filipino and Reinforced Conference titles.
In a statement, the team said the decision was made after careful consideration.
"Petro Gazz announces its decision to take a leave of absence from the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), marking a pause in its competitive participation after seven successful years," the statement read.
"This decision was made with careful consideration, as volleyball has always been at the core of Petro Gazz's identity. Over the years, the team built a legacy of excellence—winning four PVL championships, developing national team-caliber athletes, and establishing itself as one of the league's pillars," the statement added.
The move came shortly after the league reportedly shot down Petro Gazz’s proposed merger with Nxled, citing concerns over competitive balance among club teams.
As a result, all Petro Gazz players, including three-time conference Most Valuable Player Brooke Van Sickle, two-time Finals MVP MJ Phillips and two-time MVP Myla Pablo are set to become free agents.
Also hitting the free agent market are notable names Jonah Sabete, Aiza Pontillas and Djanel Cheng.
Even prior to the announcement, five players had already parted ways with the Angels, including team captain Remy Palma, Chie Saet, Blove Barbon, and Joy Dacoron.
Palma and Saet have since found new homes with Strong Group Athletics.
Petro Gazz said it will continue its volleyball efforts off the court, focusing on grassroots programs and supporting the development of players in the other PVL clubs.
"During this period, Petro Gazz will focus on nurturing the next generation of volleyball talent," the statement said.
"As part of this initiative, Petro Gazz supports the volleyball program of Nxled and other PVL teams by recommending its players, coaches, and staff, guided by its winning culture and core values," it added.
